Skip Philbrick
05/15/2009

Seminal Blues musician Skip Philbrick has been cultivating and championing the art of America’s original music in the New England area for more than 35 years. In 1966 at the age of 13 he formed his first band called the Trojans in Milford NH where he was living at the time. After moving to Peterborough in 1971 he met Peter Shonk and was introduced to the Blues. They formed the “Fat City Blues Band” and played gigs around the Monadnock region for two years before Skip moved to Providence RI in1973. For the rest of the 70s and into the early 80s Skip resided in Providence and played with three different bands - Backslap, Blue Lights and The Night Rockers – gigging mostly around the New England area. “Blue Lights” was tapped to open for Muddy Waters when he was in town.

1986 was when Skip got the call from Blues legend Luther “Guitar Jr.” Johnson to join his band. He spent the next three years touring with Luther throughout the United States and Canada. While Luther wasn’t on tour Skip kept himself very busy introducing and cultivating the Blues at the Rynborn, one of New England’s premier Blues Clubs. That relationship lasted for 18 years before the club closed in 2005. Skip still regularly performs with his band The Skip Philbrick Blues Band in and around Southern NH and is known for his no nonsense approach the his music. Although he rarely performs it live he is an avid fan of “real country music” and is expected to bring some of that with him to Brewbakers. You can expect to hear covers of artists anywhere from Muddy Waters, Freddie King and Magic Sam to Hank Williams, Junior Brown and Fred Eaglesmith.

Skip has played with and/or opened for such luminaries as Otis Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Duke Robillard, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Magic Slim and Bo Diddley. In 1988 Skip played guitar on the Handy award winning 45, “I Love Your Sexy Ways” by Luther Johnson.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see and hear one of New England’s principal Blues musicians play alone and acoustic and tell stories of the road. This performance will be video taped live for future release. Be part of the experience.
